China Opposes U.S. Arms Sale to Taiwan

The U.S. and China were at odds during defense consultations in Beijing Wednesday over the sale of U.S. arms to Taiwan.

China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency reported that in the latest defense talks China urged Washington to halt the sale of arms to Taiwan. Xinhua added that China said the issue serves as a serious obstacle for U.S.-Chinese military relations.

The news agency reported the U.S. candidly delivered its position on the issue but said other details of the consultations have not been released.

The U.S. announced in September a five-point-eight-billion-dollar arms deal with Taiwan, including upgraded versions for 145 of Taiwan’s fighter jets. The announcement invited strong resistance from China.
