Japanese Gov’t May Take Over Tokyo Electric

A Japanese daily reports the Japanese government aims to take over the struggling Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO).

The Mainichi Shimbun said the Japanese government is considering spending one trillion yen of its Nuclear Damage Liability Facilitation Fund to buy preferred shares of the company. TEPCO has been suffering from financial difficulties since a massive earthquake wrecked its Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in March.

The Japanese government also plans to replace most of the power company’s management once it acquires the stock.
