US-China Chicken Trade Row Intensifies

The United States is asking the World Trade Organization to settle a trade row with China over U.S. chicken exports.

U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk said Thursday that his country asked the WTO to establish a dispute settlement panel to address China’s imposition of antidumping and countervailing duties on imports of U.S. “broiler products,” or chickens no more than 13 weeks old. He blamed Beijing for apparently misusing its trade remedy laws and putting American jobs at risk.

In 2009, Beijing raised antidumping duties against U.S. chicken imports from four percent to 30 percent and countervailing duties from 30 percent to 105 percent. The duty hike led to a 90-percent reduction in the U.S.’s chicken exports to China.

The U.S. Commerce Department also announced Thursday that it decided to impose preliminary antidumping duties of up to 26 percent on high pressure steel cylinders from China.
