Amnesty Int'l Warns of Continued Antigov’t Protests in Middle East

Amnesty International is warning that the Middle East will see a continued wave of antigovernment protests this year if the region’s rulers don’t ensure a political transformation into democracy and human rights for their people.

The London-based international organization released a report Monday on the 2011 Arab uprisings stating that pro-democracy activists have refused to accept false promises offered by dictatorial governments, and they appear unlikely to give up their demands for democratization.

The report lauded local people for largely achieving democratic changes through their own efforts.

But Amnesty International said that responses from international bodies like UN, the EU, the African Union and the Arab League were inconsistent by taking stronger stands for human rights in some countries than in others.
