Nat'l Assembly Speaker Denies Bribery Allegations

National Assembly Speaker Park Hee-tae has flatly denied allegations that he bribed lawmakers during a 2008 Grand National Party (GNP) leadership race.

Park, who is visiting Japan, denied the allegations to reporters on Monday. His remarks come after GNP lawmaker Koh Seung-duk told prosecutors Sunday that one of Park's aides gave him an envelope containing three-million won in cash ahead of the party’s 2008 national convention. Koh said he immediately returned the envelope.

Park said Koh should clarify who he received the money from and to whom exactly he returned it.

Regarding Koh’s claims that the envelope also contained Park’s business card, the speaker said he did not circulate his card during the party convention in 2008.

Park, who is on an eleven-day official trip overseas, said he will continue with his schedule and has no plan to cancel meetings with top foreign officials.
