Wounded Crew Members of Jung Woo 2 Transferred to US Base

Wounded crew members of a South Korean fishing vessel that caught fire Wednesday are being transferred to a U.S. Antarctic research center.

The Rescue Coordination Center of New Zealand said seven wounded sailors will arrive at the U.S.’ McMurdo Station Thursday night via the U.S. research vessel Nathaniel B. Palmer.

A fire broke out on the South Korean fishing vessel, Jung Woo 2, in the Southern Ocean near Antarctica early Wednesday morning.

The blaze killed three of the vessel’s 40-member crew, which included South Korean, Vietnamese, Russian and Indonesian sailors.

Six South Korean crew members, including the captain of the ship, were rescued without serious wounds.
