Taiwan President Reelected in Vote

Taiwan voters reelected incumbent President Ma Ying-jeou on Saturday from the Nationalist Party.

The Central Election Commission of Taiwan said Ma Ying-jeou had won about 51-point-six percent of the vote compared to 45-point-six percent for Tsai Ing-wen of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party.

In the parliamentary elections that were also held, the Nationalist Party won 48 seats out of 79 regional seats. The Democratic Progressive Party won 27.

With Ma’s reelection, China and Taiwan are expected to maintain friendly ties as the incumbent president has been recognized for his work in pushing for closer ties with Beijing.

Ma entered politics in 1981 as an English interpreter for President Chiang Ching-kuo. He went on to serve time in office as the Minister of Justice as well as the Mayor of Taipei.
