A newlywed South Korean couple has been confirmed in good health after being rescued from a capsized Italian cruise ship in the Mediterranean.

An official at the South Korean Embassy in Rome says the couple was transported to a hospital by helicopter from the island of Giglio off Italy's west coast. The official says the couple received a health check and is now resting.

The couple was trapped in a cabin in the hull of the cruise ship "Costa Concordia" for 24 hours before they were rescued by local firemen.

The Foreign Ministry in Seoul has confirmed that all 34 South Koreans on board the stranded ship, including the newlyweds, have been rescued.

The Costa Concordia, carrying about 42-hundred people, was en route to Marseilles, France when it hit a sandbar off the coast of Italy late Saturday. Five people have died and roughly ten are still unaccounted for.

A police investigation has found that the captain left the ship before all the passengers had escaped.
