Natural Disasters Create Financial Losses of US $366 Bln in 2011

The UN’s antidisaster agency says natural disasters created financial losses of 366 billion U.S. dollars last year.

The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction said 302 natural disasters occurred last year and claimed 29-thousand-782 lives.

Typhoons and floods accounted for 70 percent of last year’s natural disasters, but earthquakes caused the largest number of deaths at 20-thousand-943.

The massive earthquake and tsunamis that hit the eastern part of Japan last year incurred the largest amount of financial damage at 210 billion dollars. Properties worth 40 billion dollars were lost in the large-scale flooding in Thailand.
