RFA: US Exports to N. Korea Grew Tenfold in Fiscal 2011

Radio Free Asia says the U.S. government approved 23 exports to North Korea in fiscal year 2011.

The U.S. broadcaster said Sunday that a report released by the Bureau of Industry and Security under the U.S. Department of Commerce found the U.S. approved the exports to the North from October 2010 to September 2011. The value of the commodities was estimated at around 38-point-three million dollars, or up more than tenfold from a year before.

Humanitarian food aid and medical supplies accounted for 99-point-eight percent of the exports. Other items included mobile power generators and electronic devices that passed U.S. government inspections.

Bureau of Industry and Security spokesman Eugene Cottilli said exports shipped from the U.S. to 22 export-controlled nations, including North Korea, must undergo inspection. He said all exports, excluding humanitarian aid, are subject to such scrutiny.
