'China to Provide N.Korea with Food, Oil Aid'

A Japanese daily says China decided to provide North Korea with a large amount of food and oil aid immediately following the death of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.

Citing multiple Chinese and North Korean sources, the Tokyo Shimbun said the anticipated aid will be 500-thousand tons of food and 250-thousand tons of crude oil.

This marks the first time that a Chinese aid plan to North Korea has been revealed since Kim Jong-il's death.

The newspaper interpreted Beijing's prompt provision of aid to the North as a measure to stabilize the regime under Kim Jong-il's son and successor Kim Jong-un.
