A ferry with 350 passengers aboard sunk off the east coast of Papua New Guinea. Although 219 people were rescued, the rest are still missing.

The ferry, named Rabaul Queen, sent a distress signal, which was received in Australia and then relayed to the maritime authority in Papua New Guinea. Rescue work by Australian authorities is underway. Reuter reports that most of the missing passengers are assumed to have lost their lives.

The sinking is believed to be due to unusual weather conditions. However, investigations are still underway for the exact cause.
