Death Toll Est. at 112 from Euro Cold Snap

It’s estimated that 112 people have died throughout Europe following an intense cold snap this week.

In Bulgaria, eight people succumbed to the freezing weather after the temperature fell below 30 degrees Celsius. And in the northern part of the country, a salt-water lake froze for the first time in 58 years.

In Russia, one person died and a dozen were hospitalized due to a cold spell that has settled in areas near Moscow.

Elsewhere around the world, people in China’s northern regions are staying in their homes as temperatures remain around minus 40 degrees Celsius. In Japan’s Akita Prefecture, three tourists died Wednesday in an avalanche.

Meanwhile, the United States is seeing higher-than-usual temperatures. New York has recently posted afternoon highs ten degrees Celsius warmer than previous years.
