US Charges Swiss Banks with Aiding Tax Evasion

U.S. tax authorities are charging Switzerland’s oldest bank with helping Americans evade taxes by holding assets not declared to the Internal Revenue Service.

The U.S. authorities are pressuring 270 year-old Wegelin & Co. and other Swiss banks to reveal their bank accounts.

Swiss media are criticizing Switzerland’s government and banks for giving in to pressure from the U.S., suggesting the two countries may be engulfed in disputes in various areas as well as the financial sector.

In 2010, the U.S. pressured Switzerland’s largest bank, UBS, to turn in information on the bank accounts of four-thousand American customers.

Swiss banks Julius Baer and Zurich will reveal their business results from last year this week, accepting the U.S. demand.
