US: No Update Made on Status of US-N. Korea Talks

The United States says the situation regarding U.S.-North Korea talks has not changed since talks stalled following Kim Jong-il’s death.

State Department Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters on Thursday that no changes have emerged from what Washington has been reporting over the last month and a half regarding the bilateral dialogue.

Nuland said the U.S. and the North held talks in mid-December before the death of the former leader and presented conditions to resume discussions. Nuland said since then the U.S. has been waiting for a response from the communist state.

The spokeswoman confirmed that a response would have to come from Pyongyang in order for the talks to resume.

Shortly after Kim Jong-il’s death late last year, Washington said the ball is in the North’s court regarding prospects of direct talks.
