Hundreds of Inmates Killed in Fire in Honduras Prison

Hundreds of inmates have died in a massive prison fire in Honduras.

Honduras’s Security Minister Pompeyo Bonilla said the fire broke out late Tuesday, local time, at the prison in Comayagua, about 90 kilometers north of the capital Tegucigalpa. Bonilla said the fire is estimated to have killed 358 people.

Local authorities believe the blaze was started by an inmate.

Josue Garcia, a spokesman for the local fire station, said fire fighters couldn’t free prisoners from their cells because they didn't have the keys and couldn't find the guards who had them. Garcia said the prison authorities’ poor handling of the fire led to the massive casualties.
