World Maps Increasingly Use Term

World maps published by France’s Larousse and Michelin were seen to have used the name “East Sea” to name the body of water that lies between the Korean Peninsula and Japan for the first time.

Publishing company Larousse included the name Mer de l’Est in its 2012 encyclopedia and an illustrated guide of global economies and societies.

Michelin, well known for its guidebooks for tourism and restaurants also included the East Sea along with the Sea of Japan in its world map and its guidebook for South Korea.

France’s Le Monde also started including the name “East Sea” in its newspaper and sister publications with “Sea of Japan” from 2009. Le Figaro also recently started using the two names in its publications.

The changes are expected to influence the upcoming talks regarding the name of the body of water between South Korea and Japan in April at the International Hydrographic Organization.
