Antigovernment Rallies Held in Spain, Greece

Spanish and Greek citizens have held massive protests against their governments’ strict austerity plans to overcome fiscal crises.

On Sunday in Spain, antigovernment rallies were held in some 50 cities around the country. Rally organizers said hundreds of thousands of protesters gathered in both Madrid and Barcelona.

The Spanish government announced a labor market reform plan on February 11th that lowers the ceiling of retirement benefits and makes it easy for businesses to dodge collective bargaining deals.

In Greece, three-thousand people held an antigovernment rally at a plaza in Athens. In Thessaloniki, the nation’s second largest city, one-thousand-200 people took to the streets.
