Winter Drought Plagues China’s Largest Farming Region

China’s largest farming area is suffering from its worst winter drought in 62 years.

Local radio reports say that average precipitation was just four-point-two millimeters in the northeastern provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning since last December.

China’s national climate center said since last fall, the precipitation level in the region has dropped 70 percent from the previous average to a 62-year low.

The northeastern region accounts for 25 percent of China’s food production. A continued drought in the area will raise the crop prices both in the Chinese and international markets.
