3rd US-N.Korea High-level Talks Open Thursday

U.S. and North Korean government officials opened a third round of high-level talks in Beijing Thursday.

The talks are the first to be held between the two nations since the death of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il and the transition of power to his son Kim Jong-un.

Attention is being drawn to whether the two countries will reaffirm agreements they reached during the last round of talks. The North said it would suspend its uranium enrichment program, and the U.S. agreed to provide the communist nation with 240-thousand tons of food aid.

The North’s top negotiator to the talks, Kim Kye-kwan, said his country "will wait" when asked what the North expects from the third round of talks. He made the remark shortly after arriving in Beijing. His comment suggests the North is hoping the U.S. will move first to take an active stance on Pyongyang's requests regarding the resumption of the six-way nuclear talks and food aid.

Meanwhile, U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Policy Glyn Davies, who will head the U.S. delegation to the talks, said that the resumption of the nuclear negotiations is up to North Korea.

The U.S. and the North held working-level talks in the Chinese capital on Wednesday. The two countries have not decided whether to continue to hold the high-level talks until Friday.
