China Protests Nagoya Mayor’s Denial of Nanjing Massacre

The Chinese government is continuing to protest a denial of the Nanjing Massacre by the mayor of Nagoya City, Japan.

China’s Xinhua News Agency reported that the head of the Chinese Foreign Ministry's Asian affairs department, Luo Zhaohui, expressed strong dissatisfaction over Mayor Takashi Kawamura's remarks in a meeting with Shinsuke Sugiyama, the Japanese Foreign Ministry's Director General for Asian and Oceanian Affairs.

Luo said the mayor’s irresponsible remarks distorted historical facts and seriously hurt the feelings of Chinese people. He added it is indisputable that the Nanjing Massacre was an atrocity committed by Japanese soldiers in 1937 during the Chinese-Japanese war.

Meanwhile, Chinese Internet users are staging a campaign to boycott trips to Nagoya as part of protests against the mayor’s remarks.

Mayor Kawamura told a visiting Chinese official on Monday that he doubts the Nanjing Massacre happened.
