A South Korean tanker has been released after 18 days of detention in China for allegedly polluting the Yangtze River in east Jiangsu Province with a toxic chemical.
The South Korean Consulate General in Shanghai said on Friday that the freighter’s company plans to hire an attorney to deal with the case after having paid a bail of three-point-six billion won through an insurance company to a Chinese court. The ship had departed from a port in Nantong on Thursday after the bail was paid.
The Chinese maritime authorities detained Gloria, the name of the 5,000-ton chemical tanker, at the port on February 6th after it began its probe on the phenol spill.
Phenol is a soluble white crystalline poisonous acidic derivative of benzene, that is often used in herbicides and other disinfectants.
