14 Planes Declared “Emergency” amid Quake in Japan Last Year

Japanese daily the Asahi Shimbun reports that 14 airplanes declared an “emergency” for fuel shortages during their attempts to land at airports in the capital area when the eastern part of the island country was hit by tsunamis and a devastating earthquake on March eleventh last year.

The daily said Monday that 86 planes failed to land at Narita and Haneda airports that were shut down due to the strong earthquake.

Out of the 86 planes, 14 declared an “emergency” to obtain preferential landing permission for insufficient fuel.

Experts have called the situation unprecedented.

The Japanese daily said except for the 14 planes, other planes changed their directions to head for airports in other regions, including Kansai.
