Winter Drought Plagues Yunnan Province, China

The worst winter drought to plague Yunnan Province, China in 60 years is disrupting the operation of the area’s factories and mines.

China’s official Xinhua News Agency reports that 273 streams have dried up and 413 reservoirs have bottomed out in Yunnan amid a months-long drought.

Xinhua says the serious water shortage caused by the protracted drought has forced factories and mines to halt operations in the province. Financial losses incurred by the operational suspension are estimated at 10 billion yuan.

The news agency added water is in short supply in the region and more than three million people have been without sufficient drinking water since Tuesday.
