Chinese Congress Opens 2012 Session

China’s eleventh National People’s Congress has opened its fifth session at the Great Hall of the People with three-thousand delegates attending.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao delivered a government work report to open the meeting on Monday morning.

Wen announced the government’s goal to grow its economy by seven-point-five percent this year, explaining that Beijing has set its economic target lower than in previous years to boost the efficiency and quality of the nation's economic model.

The parliamentary session, which will be the last during Chinese President Hu Jintao’s term, will run through March 14th. It will focus on social stability and economic growth.

The session will also address inflation management, the fight against corruption, narrowing income gaps, independent movements in regions of Tibet and Xinjiang, health insurance, education and welfare.
