US, N. Korea to Discuss Food Aid for 2nd Day Thursday

The United States and North Korea will hold a second day of follow-up talks on Thursday over the provision of food aid to the North.

The talks in Beijing will focus on when the U.S. will deliver 240-thousand tons of nutritional assistance to the North and how the aid will be distributed. The two sides will also discuss how distribution will be monitored.

During a third round of high-level U.S.-North Korea talks in late February, the U.S. agreed to provide the 240-thousand tons of food aid, and the North agreed to suspend its uranium enrichment program and allow International Atomic Energy Agency officials to inspect its nuclear facilities.

The U.S.’s chief delegate to the talks, special envoy for North Korean human rights issues, Robert King, told reporters on the first day of dialogue Wednesday that progress was made in negotiations. He quickly added that the two sides decided to extend the talks by another day to further consult details.

On Wednesday, the U.S. reportedly called on the North to guarantee detailed monitoring of food aid distribution in order to confirm that the assistance will reach vulnerable people in society, including children.

In response, the North proposed that they stick to the existing monitoring standards.
