'Magnitude 7 Quake Could Rattle Downtown Tokyo'

A Japanese government research team has assessed that a seven magnitude earthquake could shake downtown Tokyo.

The team of experts from Tokyo University and Kyoto University said Wednesday that it’s possible a seven-point-three magnitude quake could strike underground at Tokyo Bay. The team said in the worst case scenario, around eleven-thousand people could die and economic damage could total some 112 trillion yen.

The research team said after analyzing roughly 300 seismographs, a quake could occur at 20 kilometers below ground, a depth more shallow than previously expected.

The team noted that the more shallow the location of the quake's seismic center, the stronger the seismic intensity becomes.
