Amnesty International Calls for Justice for Comfort Women

In light of International Women’s Day on Thursday, Amnesty International called for justice for South Korean women who were forced into sexual slavery during Japanese colonial rule.

As the former sex slaves, euphemistically called "comfort women," continue to call on Japan for an apology and compensation, the Japanese government maintains its stance that its responsibility to compensate them is closed with the end of the peace treaty.

Amnesty International pointed out that while the Japanese government did provide a form of compensation, the level of compensation does not meet international standards.

The human rights watchdog called on the Japanese government and the Diet to candidly apologize to the comfort women and take immediate administrative measures to compensate them.
