Austria Textbooks to Carry Name

Textbooks in Austria will be published with the names “East Sea” and “Sea of Japan” to represent the body of water between the Korean Peninsula and Japan on maps starting this year.

Professor Isolde Hausner of the Austrian Academy of Sciences said during an interview with South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency in Brussels that the academy had agreed it was internationally appropriate to include both names. The academy had used “Sea of Japan” as the sole title in prior publications.

A letter of advice for regional onomastics in school textbooks now carries the changes.

The professor explained that the letter has no legal force, but most publishers tend to follow instructions.

The amended textbooks are currently undergoing printing and will be made available within the next two months.
