The 19th regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council will address the issues of China's forced repatriation of North Korean defectors to their homeland and the human rights violations in North Korea at a meeting in Geneva on Monday.

The United States has sent its special envoy on North Korean human rights, Robert King, to the meeting. King is also currently handling the talks on U.S. food aid provisions for Pyongyang.

He's expected to strongly urge the Chinese government to stop sending the defectors back to the North and to comply with the U.N. Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees.

In Geneva, King will meet with the U.N. Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in North Korea, Marzuki Darusman, and discuss organized rights infringements perpetrated by the North Korean government.

Meanwhile, from South Korea, lawmaker Park Sun-young who went on a hunger strike protesting the repatriations will join other activists to attend the council meeting in Geneva to call for global interest and action to guarantee the protection of the North Korean defectors’ basic rights.
