United States President Barack Obama is actively considering visiting the demilitarized zone (DMZ) during his trip to South Korea later this month to attend the Seoul Nuclear Security Summit.
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters on Tuesday that Washington is working very closely with Seoul with regards to North Korea and a number of other issues. He made the comment when asked if Obama would be visiting the DMZ during his three-day stay in South Korea.
Carney only said that a trip to the DMZ would be reflective of Obama’s “commitment to both security on the Korean Peninsula and the need for North Korea to live up to its international obligations, give up its nuclear weapons program, and return to the community of nations.”
The White House reportedly is delaying a final announcement on Obama’s possible visit to the DMZ due to security reasons.
Former President Bill Clinton made a trip to the Bridge of No Return at the Joint Security Area while former President George W. Bush visited the Dorasan Station near the inter-Korean border.
