6.8 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Japan

A series of earthquakes rattled Japan late Wednesday, of which the strongest one recorded a six-point-eight magnitude.

The six-point-eight magnitude quake occurred around 6 p.m. in waters off Japan’s northeastern coasts, shaking buildings for scores of seconds in Aomori Prefecture and Hokkaido Island.

Authorities issued a tsunami watch for an hour and a half after the quake.

Then at around 9 p.m., a six-point-one magnitude earthquake occurred in waters off Chiba Prefecture.

That quake resulted in collapsed fences and shattered building glasses in Chiba and Ibaraki prefectures. Strong tremors were also reported in downtown Tokyo.
