Number of People Per Household in Japan Below Two

The number of people per household in Japan’s capital Tokyo has fallen below two for the first time in history.

Local media reported that as of January first, 2012, the number of people per household in Tokyo stood at one-point-99.

They attributed the decline to a growing number of singles among the younger generation, as well as an increasing number of senior citizens living alone after their spouses pass away.

Some media reported that the record-low number of people per household can be interpreted as a disintegration of family ties in Japan.
