Freight traffic at the Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach in the United States plunged significantly last month due to China’s Lunar New Year holiday.

Freight container traffic at the Port of Los Angeles, which usually boasts the largest amount of traffic in the U.S., fell seven-point-eight percent year-on-year in February.

The Port of Long Beach, which usually has the second largest amount of traffic in the U.S., saw its freight container traffic drop by 18 percent compared to the same period in 2011.

As 40 percent of the freight traffic at the two ports handles imports from Asia, with most of the shipments coming from China, the drop in freight traffic is attributed to the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday which falls in February.
