China Expresses Worry, Pulls Reins on N.Korea's Rocket Plan

Beijing expressed concern over North Korea’s plan to launch a “working” satellite next month to the North Korean ambassador in China.

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Zijun met with North Korean ambassador Ji Jae-ryong on Friday and conveyed that China was watching the responses from the international society toward North Korea’s launch plan as well as Pyongyang’s moves.

Zhang also said China believes it is the joint responsibility of all related parties to retain the peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia, and that all parties must exercise restrain.

It was a rare move for China to pull the reins on Pyongyang by using the term “joint responsibility,” reflecting China’s concern over what repercussions the North Korean rocket launch may bring.
