UN Secretary-General Ban Urges N.Korea to Reconsider Rocket Launch

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged North Korea to reconsider a launch plan to fire a rocket in April. The launch would mark the centenary of founder Kim Il Sung.

UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said Ban expressed serious concern over North Korea’s statement regarding the launch. He urged Pyongyang to rethink its plans and uphold its agreement made with Washington to exercise restraint in launching long-range missiles.

Ban said the launch would be in violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1874, which bans all ballistic missile launches.

The Russian foreign ministry also expressed worry over North Korea’s satellite launch plan.

Through a statement on its website, the Russian foreign ministry said the launch plan raised serious concern and that North Korea should not violate the UN resolution.
