Osaka to Call for Shutdown of Nuke Plants in Kansai

The Japanese city of Osaka will propose this June that Kansai Electric Power shut down all nuclear power plants in the region as soon as possible.

Japanese media say the city government led by Mayor Toru Hashimoto will demand the shutdown of the facilities at a shareholders meeting of the power company. The government will call for the Osaka-based utility provider to decommission all the region’s nuclear reactors as soon as possible and spin off its power transmission operation with a view to separating the power generation and transmission divisions.

The Osaka city government is the largest shareholder of Kansai Electric Power with an eight-point-nine percent stake.

But the city government’s proposal is unlikely to be realized, as the electric company insists that nuclear power is an important energy source.
