7.4 Magnitude Quake Rattles Mexico

A seven-point-four magnitude earthquake rattled Mexico’s southwestern state of Guerrero on Tuesday bringing down bridges and collapsing some 100 homes.

The U.S. Geological Survey located the epicenter of the quake at 25 kilometers southeast of Ometepec in Guerrero state, at a depth of 17-point-seven kilometers.

Tremors from the quake and aftershocks, which lasted for several minutes, were felt in Mexico City. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake did not result in massive tsunamis but warned that secondary tsunamis could occur.

Tuesday’s quake was one of the most powerful to hit Mexico since the eight-point-one magnitude earthquake of 1985. More than six-thousand people died from the 1985 quake in Mexico City.
