NYT: Fiscal Crisis Deals a Blow to European Artists

The New York Times says artists are struggling in Europe since the European fiscal crisis has pushed governments to slash budgets for the cultural and art sectors.

The U.S. daily reported that Italy’s world-famous opera house La Scala faces a nine-million-dollar shortfall due to a cut in government subsidies.

The government in the Netherlands has cut financing for its art programs by 25 percent, and Portugal has abolished its Ministry of Culture.

The Times said European countries’ belt-tightening policies are forcing cultural and art institutions to scale down programs, and curtail grants and tours.
