UN Estimates over 9,000 Dead from Syrian Uprising

The United Nations says more than nine-thousand civilians have died during the Syrian government’s bloody crackdown on antigovernment protesters.

UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Robert Serry relayed the death toll to the UN Security Council Tuesday. He said the estimate is credible and reflects the number of deaths since the beginning of the antigovernment uprising a year ago.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for UN-Arab League envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan, said Damascus accepted a six-point peace plan crafted by Annan to end the bloodshed there.

The latest death toll is up one-thousand from the UN’s previous estimate.
