Unification Council Leader Wants New Strategy to Resolve NK Nuke Issue

An official of the National Unification Advisory Council says now is the time to seek more concrete and active measures to resolve the North Korea nuclear problem that could replace the six-way nuclear dialogue framework.

Executive vice president of the council Kim Hyun-uk made the remarks in a South Korea-U.S. forum held in Washington to mark the second anniversary of North Korea’s torpedoing of the South Korean naval vessel “Cheonan.”

Kim said North Korea has become a strong nuclear power over the past nine years as related countries tried to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue through the six-way nuclear talks. He proposed a two-track strategy aimed at simultaneously resolving the nuclear issue and promoting the opening of the North, stressing that South Korea should play a leading role in the process.
