Japanese Media: More Textbooks Lay Claim to Dokdo

Japanese media say more Japanese high school textbooks claim that South Korea’s Dokdo islets and other small islands in the East China Sea belong to Japan.

The Kyodo News Agency reported that all of the seven geography textbooks and most of the 12 modern society textbooks describe Dokdo as Takeshima and the Diaoyu Islands as the Senkaku Islands.

The Sankei Shimbun said the geography textbooks recently approved by the Japanese government include more material regarding Japan’s claims to Dokdo and Diaoyu, compared to previous versions.

The paper expressed Japan's guidelines for teaching do not mention specific territories that should be included in the textbooks. It said the content on territorial issues seemed to have increased due to a collision between China and Japan in a disputed region in the East China Sea in 2010.
