The U.S. government says it’s holding discussions with six-party talk members and allies on future steps to take regarding North Korea’s plan to launch a rocket in April.
State Department spokesman Mark Toner told reporters Friday that the U.S. has been very vocal about telling North Korea the launch is a mistake and it should back away from its plan. He added if the launch is carried out, it would call into question the credibility of North Korea's commitments.
Toner said Washington is consulting closely with Japan and other allies, and it understands their concerns. Tokyo announced earlier this week it would intercept North Korea’s rocket if it poses a threat to Japanese territory. He added China and other nations have also been outspoken about their concerns.
The U.S. spokesman explained he was not aware of further contacts between the U.S. and North Korea and that no exact date had been set for talks with South Korea and Japan.
