Aung San Suu Kyi Wins in Myanmar’s By-elections

The Associated Press says Myanmar's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi won a seat in parliament in the nation's by-elections on Sunday.

The report said Suu Kyi's party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), announced that she scored a landslide victory based on preliminary results.

The NLD had nominated candidates for 44 districts out of the total 45 including two provincial council seats.

Suu Kyi first became involved in the democratization movement of her country in 1988, and if her victory is confirmed, she will hold public office for the first time.

The Sunday by-elections drew global attention as a test case on Myanmar's democracy.
