ASEAN Issues Statement on NK Rocket Launch

Leaders of the ten-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have announced a joint statement expressing concern over North Korea’s plan to launch a long-range rocket.

AFP and other media reported that as the ASEAN leaders were wrapping up the two-day summit on Wednesday, they released a statement that urged North Korea and other countries to refrain from taking any action that may heighten tension on the Korean Peninsula.

The statement also called for a swift resumption of the six-party nuclear talks.

In addition, the ASEAN leaders agreed to enhance efforts to resolve a territorial dispute in the South China Sea.
