A new UN resolution seeking to bring an end to the violence in Syria was nixed after being voted down by China and Russia.

The UN Security Council voted Thursday on the resolution which aims to slap economic and diplomatic sanctions on Syria if President Bashar al-Assad does not withdraw troops and heavy weapons from populated areas within ten days.

Of the 15 Security Council member nations, eleven voted in favor of the resolution presented by Britain. South Africa and Pakistan abstained while both permanent Security Council members China and Russia vetoed the resolution, marking the third time they've voted down resolutions on Syria since September of last year.
