Chinese authorities say at least 62 people have died or gone missing from heavy rains that pounded Beijing and the provinces of Sichuan and Shanxi this past weekend.

The Beijing city government announced that the Chinese capital saw record rainfall from Saturday night through Sunday morning. Officials say 37 people have been confirmed dead from the heaviest rains in 61 years.

Of the dead, 25 were swept away by flood waters, six were buried under collapsed houses, five were electrocuted and one was struck by lightning.

Overall, one-point-nine million people have fallen victim to the heavy rains that caused financial losses of ten billion yuan.
