77 Confirmed Dead from Heavy Rainfall in Beijing

China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency reports that the death toll resulting from the heaviest rainfall Beijing has seen in 61 years has increased to 77.

This is more than double the number of deaths previously announced by the Beijing city government, which stood at 37. The revised number comes amid suspicions that Beijing authorities had intentionally concealed and reduced the number of victims from Saturday’s downpour.

Meanwhile, Beijing authorities announced that the secretary of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party and mayor of Beijing Guo Jinlong decided to resign from the mayor post, as demanded by Chinese citizens through the Chinese version of Twitter, Weibo.

The city of Beijing said that the largest amount of precipitation was seen on July 21st since records were kept in China in 1952. The deluge led to enormous damage in the city from collapsing river banks and flooding streets.
