US Imposes Prelim. Antidumping Tariffs on Korean Washing Machines

The U.S. Commerce Department has imposed preliminary antidumping tariffs as high as 82 percent on South Korean washing machines.

The department announced on Monday that it was slapping preliminary antidumping tariffs of 82 percent on Daewoo Electronics, 12 percent on LG Electronics and nine percent on Samsung Electronics.

The department’s move comes after U.S. home appliance maker Whirlpool filed late last year antidumping and countervailing duty petitions against the South Korean washing machine manufacturers, claiming those firms were selling washers in the United States at prices below market value.

The Commerce Department will reach a final decision on types of duties in December. Meanwhile, the United States International Trade Commission will rule next January whether South Korean firms sold washing machines below manufacturing costs.
