The United States and North Korea reportedly held an informal contact in Singapore for three days this week.
North Korea’s deputy delegate to the six-way nuclear talks, Choi Son-hee, sent an e-mail to the Voice of America and confirmed that the contact was held between Tuesday and Thursday.
Choi was present at the contact and said in the e-mail that North Korean officials told U.S. officials that resolving the North’s nuclear issue and improving U.S.-North Korea relations are entirely up to Washington’s willingness and determination.
She continued that North Korean officials stressed that Pyongyang will make moves toward denuclearization once the U.S. clearly demonstrates through action its intent to scrap what the North calls hostile policies against it.
The U.S. State Department responded saying that the U.S. does not have hostile intentions toward the North. The department clarified that though it’s true North Korea and the U.S. held the informal contact in Singapore, it was through a private channel without the involvement of the U.S. government.
